The battle at the Lys (in Dutch Leieslag), it was the last battle of the 18 days campaign. The entire Belgian Army, though running out of food and ammunition, held up the German Army from the 23rd of May until surrender at the 28th. Wikipedia says that about 3000 Belgians were killed in action, but a far greater number of Germans died during those days.
Unlike the British, who first retreated into prepared bunkers the Belgian army tried to form and hold a continuous front, that was constantly engaged by German attacks. The Belgian Artillery, far superior in quality then their German counterparts made a successful resistance possible. They did their job so well that a drafted unit at half strength could fight of German professionals so well that the German commanding officer mistakenly reported them as elite forces.
Another German report stated that the Belgian troops fought ferociously even when ammunition ran out the soldiers began throwing bricks instead.
The Battle of the Lys was important because it was one of the reasons Operation Dynamo, that saved the British army, could happen: the Germans waited for the Belgian front to collapse to attack the British from all sides.
The battle also saw one of the few massacres of civilian population by the Wehrmacht of 1940: At Vinkt German troops frustrated by great losses, accurate Belgian Artillery fire and the inability to advance (they fought against Chasseurs Ardennais, at that time Belgium's elite forces that could make a successful stand against most German units) thought that the Belgian army received information from the civilian population (which is illegal according the laws of war) and shot a small number of them. A greater amount of hostages were locked up in the church of Vinkt, but a rogue grenade (it is still unclear whether this shell was German or Belgian) hit the bell tower which collapsed on top of the church, killing many of those inside.
